Historical facts:

This german sub had it´s first combat mission (used previously for training) during the last period of WWII.

When it left port, The objective was to patrol the English Channel.

It´s base in Bremen,Norway at the day of departure was under a heavy attack. Therefore radio silence was usual standard to avoid detection.

After some time at Sea, radio messages stated the the Wolfpack vessels should submerge with the black flag up; as a sign for surrender...

The Captain and crew had a training that made this incoming question hard to understand; they should never surrender their vessel, plus, if something goes bad, just sink it without any possibilities for the enemy to get control over it  as well as their secrets as the well known "Enigma"; a cryptographic machine that fooled the allied forces during it´s appearance during WWII; this particular device should never be capture for instance.

I made a video with several images taken from video recording that can really give you a pretty good idea of the way it is nowadays after so many decades under the water.
